How stair stringer is calculated

The riser count is yours to choose; everything else follows from it. The calculator divides the total rise evenly, lays the treads out across the run, and reports what is left of the stock behind the notches — the throat, which is what actually decides whether a stringer is strong enough to cut.

The reference check reports what the selected standard says about riser height, tread depth and the guidance's span limit. It is informational: it tells you which provision a number is close to, not whether your stair may be built.

unit rise = total rise ÷ riser count

total run = (riser count − 1) × unit run

throat = stock width − (rise × run) ÷ √(rise² + run²)

Questions

Why does the cut length differ from the flight diagonal?
A deck stringer hangs from the rim joist, so the deck surface is the top walking surface and the board climbs one riser less than the flight does. The calculator reports both: the cut length is what you buy and cut, the line length is the flight itself.
What is the throat, and why does it matter?
The throat is the timber left behind the notches, measured square to the cut line. Guidance for cut stringers assumes at least five inches; below that the stringer is being asked to carry a stair on very little material.
Can I use 2×10 stock instead of 2×12?
You can, and the calculator will tell you what it costs you: the throat shrinks by the difference, and the deck guidance the span limit comes from assumes 2×12. Both appear as warnings rather than being silently accepted.
